What federal rules cover a New York to Florida move?

The two state centroids are 1,063 straight-line miles apart; a drive from a New York pickup to a Florida delivery is longer and depends on both addresses. A household move across a state line falls under the federal household-goods rules in 49 CFR Part 375, which the interstate moving rules guide sets out section by section:

  • A written estimate based on a physical survey of your goods, unless you waive the survey in writing, that says whether it is binding or non-binding (375.401).
  • On a non-binding estimate, the most the mover may demand at delivery is 110 percent of the estimate, plus services you asked for after the bill of lading and any impracticable-operation charges, capped at 15 percent of the other charges (375.703); a balance left over is invoiced afterwards (375.807).
  • If your goods wait in storage-in-transit, the mover owes you written notice before that period ends and they convert to permanent storage (375.609).
  • Look up the carrier’s name or USDOT number in Mover Check before a deposit, read the estimate’s terms in Quote Check, and line up written offers in Compare Quotes.
