Data

Every figure on YardPermit comes from one of three official files, or is arithmetic on them that the page shows. This page says what each file measures, how it is used, and what is not in any of them. Files are taken as published; nothing is estimated, smoothed or projected.

State-to-state migration

Each cell counts people living in one state who lived in another state one year earlier. It is a previous-residence statistic, so it does not count household-goods shipments, trucks or permanent relocations. Every estimate carries a 90% margin of error, and the site prints that margin beside the figure rather than hiding it. From this file come the 51 state hubs, the 368 ranked pairs in the largest state-to-state moves table, and the national totals on the migration data page.

Our California migration reading puts one state's outbound and inbound totals beside their 90% uncertainty, then opens its destination cells as a downloadable CSV.

FMCSA company records

Motus AuthHist - All With History

Mover Check queries the full census file live for every lookup, then reads the MOTUS authority history for the one record that matches. The site keeps a cached subset of 1,832 household-goods records for the case where FMCSA’s service is down and an exact USDOT number is searched; that cache is never used to say a company does not exist. Company records are not published as pages of their own and are kept out of search indexes.

State geometry

U.S. Census Bureau TIGER/Line (via us-atlas 10m Albers): State centroids are computed with d3.geoCentroid on TIGER-derived polygons. Distances shown on state-to-state pages are state-centroid straight-line distances. They are not driving miles, not a highway recommendation, and not a shipping zone. Driving distance requires a city pair and a routing provider.

How to read a derived figure

Ranks, shares, net balances and confidence intervals are YardPermit’s arithmetic on the Census table, and each page states the derivation next to the number. A rank is a competition rank among cells that carry an estimate, so ties share a rank. A net balance is one estimate minus another, and its margin of error is the square root of the sum of the two squared margins; where the balance is smaller than that margin the page says the direction is not established. The methodology pages give the full rules.

What is not in these files

Mover prices, average moving costs, fuel, tolls, insurance rates, city-to-city or ZIP-to-ZIP migration, driving distances, customer reviews and any 2025 or 2026 state-to-state table. When a page needs one of those it says so and stops, rather than filling the gap with an invented number.
